Altenew Let It Shine Homework Day 5

6:12 PM
I am very late in getting my post up.  I had my card almost finished & then I had a bunch of other stuff to do around the house.  I had a chance to get back to it today.  I ended up making my favorite thing lately, a shaker card.  I also went with really light colors.  It's way different from my usual style & I just love it.

The class topic was foil.  Mainly how to use foil without a laminating machine or a minc.  I happen to have both, but I decided to stay true to class.  I colored the love die cut with my Spectrum Noir markers & then used my Zig two way glue pen to make the bottom sticky & added foil to the sticky part.  The back of the shaker frame is from the 6x6 paper pad Kioshi from Basic Grey. I cut out my shaker frame with my Nestabilites using two layers of fun foam & a top layer of patterned paper.  I edged my card & top layer of the shaker card with the two way pen & then added gold foil to them.  I added some die cut gold hearts across the card.  The shaker is filled with clear sequins as well as clear flower sequins.  I added gold sequins first & it looked awful! So I obviously took them out & opted for clear sequins.  I really think the soft colors with hints of gold are perfect for spring.

I really enjoyed this class.  I'm taking the new one at online card classes this week.  After that I think I may go back to Altanew academy & take the watercolor class.  I find it fun to have a specific technique to challenge myself to try each day.

Altenew Let It Shine Homework Day 4

8:12 PM
Class discussion was about using mirror card stock.  Carissa shares my belief that a little goes a long way.  I love tons of glitter & shimmer, but flat out gold can take over a card fast.  She did three cards for us, but I only had time for one.  I used parts from a card I had started back on day two.  When I did the watercolor roses on watercolor paper I also did one on my Bristol paper to see how it worked.  It came out great as expected.

I used the technique where you make one rectangle image & cut two smaller rectangles out of it.
Then just cut out two black layers just slightly larger than the two rectangles & layer them all together.  It ends up looking like you did more work than you did.  I mounted mine on foam tape for added impact.  I added the words love you that I did cut from gold mirror paper to the center piece of my card.  I also added a cut out rose that was left over from my earlier project.  I only have one tiny heart punch so I looked around at all of my punches.  It turns out I have a few border punches with little hearts in them.  I even have the Prima gear die cuts with tiny hearts in them.  I punched & added some gold hearts to my project to finish it off. I love the little pops of gold throughout the card.

Altenew Let It Shine Homework Day 3

Yesterday was day three of the Altenewacademy.com class and we went over sparkle pens.  What a great thing they are!  I am in love with my Wink of Stella marker but the new Spectrum Noir shimmer pens are amazing!  They have even more sparkle & shimmer than any other marker I've seen.  I just love them. I have had the clear Wink of Stella marker but I wasn't very impressed with the colored Wink of Stella when I had a chance to try them.  I had to try the Spectrum Noir sparkle pens when I saw them at JoAnn Crafts last week so I got the only set they had.

My card layout is rather simple because the colors are so bold. I embossed the Persian motifs images all over watercolor paper with pearl embossing powder.  Then I colored in the images with my three sparkle markers.  I blended some of the colors together.  I stamped, embossed & colored in one separate image so I could cut it out & mount it on the front of the card.  I then colored a strip of white paper with the purple sparkle pen & cut it out with the words thank you.  I attached the words & the extra piece to a vellum strip of vellum that I had embossed with a sentiment.

Altenew Let It Shine Homework Day 2

6:07 PM
Yesterday was another great class video for the Let It Shine class at Altenewcademy.com .  We went over adding embellishments to add the perfect touch to your card.  I have a hard time with this.  It's not that I don't want to add pretty things, it's that I want to add ALL the pretty things.  I just have to pick a point to stop.  I think many of us have that problem.  I kept things to a minimum because I used a very strong red in my background.

My card was inspired by a video I saw by Nina Marie.  She can be found at ninamariedesign.com .  I did the background the way she did & of course mine came out quite different.  Then I water colored three extra roses but added an additional top layer with Victorian Gold embossing powder (E.P.).  The rest of my card is pretty basic.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Jil
